I have a new tutorial for you today! If you saw my last couple FOTDs then you would know that I’ve been loving bold lips with lighter eye makeup. Even though I am aiming this for spring, it would be good for all seasons and goes with any lip colour whether that be bright or even something dark. I think bold lips are a great way to look pulled together quickly, plus a great way to take a look from day to night. Having acquired some bright lipsticks over the last couple months, I’m pretty much dying to use them, so here it is!
Since my ‘base’ is basically the same in every tutorial, I went ahead and did my foundation, concealer and brows ahead of time and I will list what I used.
Simple Light Moisturizer
Maybelline Baby Skin Primer
NYX Dewy Finish Setting Spray
L’Oreal True Match Foundation in N1 Soft Ivory
Hard Candy Glamoflauge Concealer in Ultra Light
Bare Minerals Concealer in Bisque
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Whiz in Soft Brown
ELF Clear Brow Mascara
Bronzer, Blush and Highlight
Once the base was done, I contoured with Nars Bronzing Powder in Casino and then blended my life away basically. This isn’t the most blendable bronzer I’ve ever tried, but I love the colour so it’s worth it. For blush I decided to go with something that would give a natural glow, but not compete with the bold lip I’m going to wear. I chose Physician’s Formula Happy Booster Blush in Natural. It gives the appearance of a natural flush and glow, but nothing too bright. The camera really doesn’t do the pretty glow this gives any justice. After that I added my highlight which was the MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle (not pictured). Finally for the last face step, I set everything with NYX Dewy Finish setting spray to hold it in place.
For the eyes I will be using the Urban Decay Naked Palette. I chose this because the shades in it are PERFECT for a neutral eye. Plus if you don’t have the Naked Palette, I’m positive you can find similar shades to replicate this look. You could easily pick one light shade from this palette, sweep it on the lid with some liner and that would be a super quick way to achieve this style of look. For today’s look I chose to give the eyes a little more definition.
To start, I primed my eyes with Urban Decay Primer potion. To begin defining my eyes I started in the crease. Using a fluffy crease brush I mixed Naked and Buck together and using a windshield wiper motion blended it into the crease. For my skin tone these shades give great definition to my eyes without being too dark.
Next I moved onto the lid and picked up Sin using a flat shader brush. I then placed this on the whole lid.
Next using the same flat shader brush I picked up Sidecar and placed it directly over sin.
Going back to the original 2 shades, Naked and Buck, I mixed these again with a crease brush and placed it above the crease as a transition shade.
To deepen the look slightly, I then picked up Smog and placed it in the outer V and then blended everything out.
For the lower lashline, I started by mixing Buck and Naked and smudging it in. This didn’t give me the definition I was looking for so I added Smog and Darkhorse to the outer half of the lower lashline for some depth.
For the inner half, I used Sin. I then added Virgin as my brow bone highlight and lined my upper lashline with black Cream Eyeliner from ELF. I did make a slight wing to draw my eyes out a little, but you could of course keep it simple and just line your lashline.
Lastly I added 2 coats of mascara, which was of course Benefit’s They’re Real.
This is the finished eye look:
At this point, you could easily throw on some lip gloss or a neutral lipstick and have an awesome day time look. But for this look, I’m going a little bolder.
Before wearing a bold lip, make sure your lips are well moisturized and exfoliated. If you don’t have a lip scrub, just mix brown sugar and honey and scrub until your lips are smooth.
If you have a lip liner that goes with the colour you pick, it does make wearing bold lips easier. I didn’t have one, so I applied the lipstick and touched up with a Q-Tip to clean up the edges.
This eye look goes with tons of lip colours, so I’m going to show you some of the shades I pair it with.
The first shade I wanted to show is Maybelline The Vivids Lipstick in Hot Plum. This goes really well with the Radiant orchid trend of the season and is a great stepping stone for people who want to expand slightly out of the pink realm, since this is pinky-purple.
The next shade is a shade that I own nothing else like because it’s orange. Orange is super popular this season and after finding a shade that compliments me, I absolutely love it.
I think this shade works because it has a slight pinky-coral undertone, so it’s not straight up orange. I didn’t want a really warm orange because I was afraid it would make my teeth look yellow. This is Maybelline Color Sensational The Vivids in Vibrant Mandarine.
The last shade I have been pairing with this look is a bright hot pink. I was pretty done with nice faces at this point, so that explains the next picture. My serious faces have a limit haha.
The last lip colour is the Milani Lip Intense in Pink Rave.
With a simple eye look like this, the possibilities are endless. I know I will be wearing this look for a long time to come even in the winter with dark berry or red lips.
Let me know what you think of the bold lips trend in the comments below, or if there are any shades I should try, let me know! I’m always on the hunt for more bright lippies.
Bye for now!
