My Makeup Collection and Storage!

Hi Everyone!

I recently sorted and organized my makeup collection and it’s finally ready to share. I have a pretty small living space, so I thought this might be helpful for those of you who are trying to figure out how to organize your makeup with limited space like I have.

Here is my overall setup:

Makeup Setup

Like I said, my space is somewhat limited so this was initially going to be my study corner, but because of our tiny bathroom and its terrible lighting (it’s painted yellow) I decided to move my ‘beauty space’ out into the living room so I would have more room and natural light. With my laptop I can pretty much study anywhere anyway.

Since the desk was originally chosen for studying, it’s not my most favourite since the glass top really attracts makeup and fingerprints, but it was fairly inexpensive and it has a nice wide surface for me to work on. The desk is from Wal-Mart and it cost me less than $50. It does have a tray underneath which is a nice spot to put wipes or extra supplies so you can have as much room on the tabletop as possible.

Desk

The main component of my storage is an Alex 5 Drawer unit from IKEA. I was originally going to go for the 6 drawer or the 9 drawer, but the shipping was insane. The 5 drawer is perfect for my collection now and it’s not too big for the space I have available. The bottom 3 drawers are deeper, which I like because it can store taller products or bulkier items here and they don’t have to be laying down. Incorporating the drawers really helped free up space around my desk.

On my desktop, I’m tried to keep it pretty neat with minimal clutter. I only keep my lamp, my brushes, my mirror and a tray with odds and ends that I reach for often (eye drops, clips to pin my hair back, RT Sponge, hand sanitizer and tweezers). I actually found the tray at the dollar store for $1.25 and I really liked the shape of it so I decided to pick it up and eventually find a use for it as I was organizing.

This lamp was one I’ve had for a couple years now, I originally bought it for my dorm room, but I love the colours so I figured it would work perfectly here. I like the pop of colour when everything else is black and white as well.

One of my best purchases for my makeup space was definitely my mirror. I got this from Wal-Mart and I almost didn’t buy it. I was also considering a wall mirror, but this is much better. This is great because I can get it nice and close to my face which is so handy for detailed stuff like eyeliner and brows. It also has a magnifying side, but I don’t use that as much. I actually miss my mirror when I go away for the weekend, it’s just not the same without it! Even if you have a big mirror, I highly recommend getting a close up mirror, it’s so handy.

Moving on to actual makeup stuff (the fun stuff obviously), I’m going to start with my brushes. I used to keep my brushes in two mugs on my desktop, but I quickly outgrew that so I came up with a cheap and space efficient solution.

brush storage

I picked up a rectangular vase from Wal-Mart and some glass fill from the dollar store to store my brushes. Ideally I was looking for smaller fill, but this still works okay. This has enough room for all my brushes, even the larger face brushes. I try and put the face brushes on one side and the eye brushes on the other for easier access, but that doesn’t always happen if I put them away in a hurry. I like this system for storing my brushes because it can be put right next to the wall and it hardly takes up any room. Plus with everything being clear I can easily see my brushes and quickly grab whatever I’m reaching for.

Brush Storage

Now onto what’s actually on top of/inside of the drawers!

On top of the drawers, I keep all of my perfumes and body sprays, my Moroccan Oil (my hair essential) and moisturizer. If these weren’t out, I probably wouldn’t reach for them so having them out reminds me to use them. I also keep my lipsticks here in holders I got very inexpensively from Ebay. I use to have a 3rd holder for lip glosses, but the slots just aren’t tall enough, so they rattled around which annoyed the hell out of me. I moved the glosses into a drawer, since I reach for them less often than the lipsticks anyway. The lipstick holders were less than $4 each including shipping, which is awesome! They are a bit of a tight fit with some square tubes (Color Sensational Lipsticks for example), but for that price, I make it work. I will say that if you have a lot of NYX Black Label Lipsticks, these don’t fit at all in these holders. I only have one so I wasn’t too bothered by it.

This top drawer is probably the fullest of all of all the drawers. I did this so it’s right there for me to reach for. Despite being full, it’s all divided pretty neatly with plastic containers that I found at Dollarama. I was really impressed that they had a variety of shapes and sizes for me to choose from. I got several of the long trays that are in the front of the drawer because I figured they would be great for lining up blushes and bronzers and storing mascaras and eyeliners. I also picked up a couple small square containers, which are perfect for cream eyeshadows and other jarred products. The drawer wasn’t quite wide enough to fit a 4th long container in the front so I put the 4th container in the back, holding mainly lip liners and a couple other random things that I don’t reach for as often as the products in the front.

Drawer 2

The second drawer is my palette drawer. I don’t have any special storage for these, but I was able to spread them out pretty well so I can see them. I did put lesser used palettes at the bottom, since they aren’t reached for as much.

Drawer 3

drawer 3

The third drawer out of 5 is where I keep foundations (so they can be stood up), concealers, powders, highlighters, lip glosses and chubby pencil type lip products. To hold my foundations, concealers etc. I found larger square containers that are exactly like the containers I showed before that were holding the cream eyeshadows, just bigger. This drawer had a little extra room, so I added my backup contacts and some Veet in the back corner. This drawer looks really clean and organized because of how neatly it’s separated, I love it!

Drawer 4

In the second last drawer I keep hair products and nail polish. There isn’t really a good way to store the hair products that I’ve found since there isn’t a container they fit in, but I’m still happy with how this is arranged. Before I had the Alex drawers, my hair and nail products were in a basket under my desk, so this is a great improvement. I can see everything this way since they can all lay flat. I am considering trying to find a basket to hold the nail polishes, but for now they are mostly organized by brand. I’m terrible at nails, so this set-up is okay with me for now.

The last drawer is also dedicated to hair stuff, but this drawer is all of my hair tools. I was really happy that my hot rollers fit in this drawer, I was worried that they might be too tall but they fit in perfectly. I’m able to fit my hot rollers and their clips, my hair dryer, my curling wand, my brush and a couple other random hair related stuff.

Lastly, I have one other area of storage that is currently pretty empty, but I will use this for extra products I collect in the future. It’s kind of an interesting piece to my storage so I thought I’d show it anyway.

magnetic board

Before the I got the drawers, I used this magnetic makeup board as my primary storage. My dad made this for me and I painted it. It’s the perfect storage solution for small spaces or dorm rooms, especially if you don’t even have rooms for drawers, in a bathroom for example. I purchased Neodymium Magnets online, as regular magnets aren’t strong enough to hold makeup products. I will use this for when I collect more products and for displaying products I haven’t used in a while to remind myself to use them. It’s also perfect for leaving reminders and memos for myself. I really have gotten a lot of use out of this and it really helps me organize my small space.

So there you have it! Let me know in the comments how you store your makeup, I love these kinds of posts and videos. Also if there are any products you’re curious about leave me a comment below!

Bye for now!

I really like your set up! Looks really nice! I am in the process of organizing my beauty stuff as well. I recently bought an organizer that goes on the back of a door. It has mesh pockets so I will be able to see what’s inside. That is a great mirror too! πŸ™‚ enjoyed this post! xo

Thank you! I’ve seen the mesh hangers, I looked into those when I first made my little makeup corner, but I don’t have a spot to hang one. It’ll be perfect because you’ll be able to see your products so easily.

This is so organised. I have pencil pots for brushes and mascara, eyeliners, a huge box for lip products which means I wear the same ones all the time, and drawers ull of all my products. I really need more space!

Thank you! You should try giving the lip products a shuffle so you see ones that have been hiding at the bottom!
