Liquid lipsticks have taken over the internet and it seems like every cosmetic company is announcing their version of the liquid lippie on the daily. I have tried many brands, but recently I have become obsessed with Jeffree Star and I now own 6 of his Velour Liquid Lipsticks. He has a ton of shades, many of which are very unique shades. I am getting into wearing more unique shades. I love building a makeup look around a unique lip colour and I’m starting to feel more confident wearing different shades out. I haven’t graduated to many of the shades that this brand offers, but I’m getting there. I feel like if applied well and worn with an eye look that compliments, you can really wear any lip colour.
The formula of these is thin and is best applied in one light layer. These are super pigmented so I never find that I need a second layer, but when I have went over an area a second time to touch up, I do find that these get a bit crumbly. With one light layer these are very long lasting and don’t feel overly drying on the lips. I will say though that I love the long wear of liquid lipsticks and the super intense matte look, so it would take a lot for me to say a liquid lipstick was too dry. Out of the formulas I’ve tried (Stila, Kat Von D, LA Splash etc.) this one is definitely not the driest. It is by far my favourite formula I’ve tried.
The wand on these liquid lipstick is awesome. The edge has a sharp slant, which is the perfect shape to really shape out your lips. Having thin lips, this is a huge plus for me. I do still wear a lip liner with these because I prefer that, but you could definitely go without.
The packaging on these is adorable. The regular line has these adorable hot pink caps with gold stars. The limited edition shades have a white cap with rose gold stars. The packaging on these is a pretty simple tube style, but it’s pretty functional which is important. The lid clicks on tight and the product never pools around the edge of the tube. It also doesn’t cluster around the wand stick, which was a complaint of mine with the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks.
So now that I’ve talked about the general facts about these, lets talk about the shades I own. Some of the names of these are on the weird side, I’ll forewarn.
This lip colour has started a love affair for me with dark brown lips. I love dark lip colours, but this is so beautiful. I know a lot of people are afraid of brown, but this shade is so deep and rich- it’s stunning.
This name isn’t weird, it’s classic 90s. This shade is a little out there, but you may remember my fascination with grey/taupe lips from a couple months back. I have worn this alone (actually out of the house) and I’ve used it for mixing too and I love it both ways.
Everyone needs a dark red in their life and this is mine. This shade is perfect for fall and winter, especially when paired with a warm smokey eye.
This shade was 1 of 5 limited edition shades released as part of this year’s holiday collection. This is probably the most wearable of the shades I own out of this line. Jeffree Star does weird and unique shades well, but it turns out he does wearable well too. This is a medium mauve pink shade that is very every day appropriate. This one is still in stock as I’m writing this, so if you like this shade you can still get it!
This name is, umm, interesting. I’m not really surprised since this brand likes to push the boundaries a little bit. In terms of the shade it’s a medium-deep hot pink. I was expecting this to be a little deeper, more berry, but on me it comes across brighter. I really like this shade, it’s the kind of shade that would look good in all seasons and with basically any eye look. I did notice that this one isn’t completely transfer proof. This one is long wearing, but it does transfer slightly whereas most of the other shades I’ve tried don’t. For some reason this was picking up really red on camera, but it’s definitely more pink than red in person.
The last shade I own was also limited edition for the holidays, but will now be permanent for spring 2016. This shade intimidated me at first but after playing with it for a bit, I really like it. If you’re too afraid to go for a shade like Dominatrix right away, I suggest trying something like this.
Velour Lip Scrub
One of the keys to pulling off a super matte lip is having moisturized and flake free lips. I have tried a couple of different lip scrubs, but never found anything exceptional. Until I tried this one. This scrub was $12 and it comes with a ton of product (30g) for the price. You don’t need a lot of this to get your lips super soft and the flavour I chose (strawberry gum) tastes amazing! If you’re going to pick up even 1 liquid lipstick from this brand, I recommend getting this to go with it.
On top of the shades JS already offers, you can mix these to create your own unique shades. I have been playing around this to see what I can come up with and I can definitely make a post on this if you’re interested. This is a great way to expand your shade selection without spending a dime more.
Overall, I love this brand and I will likely continue to add to my collection. I love the liquid lipstick trend and am always looking for new formulas to try out. If you have any suggestions leave them in the comments below!
Bye for now!
