My Makeup Story

November 7, 2014

Hi Everyone!

I have been seeing this tag go around for a while so I decided to do it even though I wasn’t tagged. It looks really fun so let’s do it!

Question One: How old were you when you started wearing makeup?

A: I started wearing makeup when i was around 14, in my first year of high school because that’s when I was allowed to. I wanted to way before that, but waiting until high school was my mom’s rule so I had to wait it out.

Question Two: How did you get into makeup?

I have been into makeup for as long as I can remember. As a little kid I would ask my mom to put makeup on my friends and I at sleepovers and I even once tried to get out of the house with lip gloss on my eyelids haha! When I was officially allowed to wear makeup, I got really into eyeshadow, mainly purple eyeshadow. That’s what I thought I should wear for my hazel eyes so that’s all I wore..literally almost nothing else, no blush, no lipstick…nothing. I have always loved makeup, but it was about a year ago that I got really REALLY into it. I have learned so much in this last year, I look back at old photos and I’m like what the hell was I doing?!

Flashback to all purple all the time…

Question Three: What are some of your favorite brands?

I have discovered so many great brands so it’s sooo hard for me to choose, but I’d have to say my favourites are MAC, Lorac (Best. Eyeshadows, Ever.) and Milani

Question Four: What does makeup mean to you?

Makeup means a lot to me. I know that to some people it’s pretty unimportant, but it goes way beyond just looks for me. Makeup has become my stress reliever and my creative outlet. I never considered myself to be creative, but makeup allows me to be creative in my own way. It’s also the first hobby I’ve loved enough to stick with. It’s a unique part of me, something that I was missing for a long time.

Question Five: If you could only wear 4 products on your face what would they be?

This is a tough one because I basically do a full face or nothing. If I absolutely HAD to pick I would pick- foundation, blush, mascara and brow products. I love the way foundation evens out my skin and without blush I look dead so I can’t leave that out. i never used to do my brows, but now my look isn’t complete without filling them in. Mascara is pretty much a no brainer for my one eye product.

Question Six: What is your favorite thing about makeup?

Makeup just makes me feel relaxed and put together, I never feel quite the same if I don’t wear any, even though I do sometimes go without because of time. I also enjoy putting makeup on other people and making them feel good, there is nothing better than doing someone else’s makeup and seeing them look at themselves and knowing I made them feel good! It’s amazing how much you can do with makeup!

Question Seven: What do you think about drugstore makeup vs high end makeup?

My collection is a good mix of drug store and high end products. I think that the drug store offers tons of great options and if you look hard enough you can absolutely find dupes for high end makeup. Most of the drugstore brands I do like such as Milani can’t really be found in Canada, so that’s a bit annoying. I do get somewhat frustrated when I can’t test shades or swatch products, the drug stores near me are seriously lacking in testers. I will say though that I find drugstore makeup to be getting more and more expensive, or maybe that’s just me. In terms of high end makeup, I do have a soft spot for it, I have found so many of my absolute favourites! I just love wandering around Sephora swatching to my heart’s content!

Question Eight: What is one tip of advice you can give to a beginner?

For a beginner I would suggest more than anything is to play around when you’re not going anywhere, experiment and have fun with it. After all it’s just makeup and it washes off. I think it’s so fun to play around and discover your makeup style. And never let anyone tell you what you can and can’t wear, makeup can be an expression of your personality!

Question Nine: What is one makeup trend you never understood?

I have to say that I just don’t get super over defined, carved out brows. I’m 100% for thicker brows- I haven’t gotten mine done in 9 months and I shape them myself to keep them thicker, but brows that are really block-like and overshaped just take over the whole face. My brows are quite round in shape so this would never work for me and I think that’s half the problem, people try to do this and end up with scary sharpie brows. But overall I don’t think makeup should have any rules, so rock it however you want!

Question Ten: What do you think about the beauty community on Youtube?

I have mixed feelings about the beauty community on Youtube. On one hand, I have learned an ENORMOUS amount from Youtube, all the basics I taught myself from Youtube. Now that I’ve been watching it for a while, I do find myself getting bored, the content can be really similar. Sometimes it just seems a bit excessive to me, the beauty community can quickly become completely emphasized on stuff which is not why I like makeup. I do still watch Youtube almost every day, but I am a lot more selective than I was when I initially found the beauty community.

So there you have it, my makeup story! I tag all of you to do this tag, I want to know what your makeup story is!

Bye for now!
