Products I Regret Buying #1

May 6, 2015

Hi Everyone!

Today I’m going to be sharing some products I wish I had skipped. I talk a lot about products I love, but I think it’s important to also mention stuff that I should have passed on or saved my money for something else. Some of this stuff I might have liked initially but I’ve now realized by using other products that it wasn’t as good as I thought, or some of these I bought because they were hyped up or for whatever reason. I don’t mean that these products are bad for the most part, just not my style or they just didn’t work for me. Anyway, enough disclaimers, let’s get to the products!

MAC Pro Longwear Concealer NW15

The first product is so popular, but I just couldn’t make this work for me. It doesn’t matter how I set this or how little I apply it creases like crazy which is a huge pet peeve of mine. I purchased this as a highlighting concealer but it doesn’t do any highlighting whatsoever, which isn’t the product’s fault, but MAC doesn’t have a great range of light shades for this product so I do fault them there. This might look like I’ve used a lot of it, but that’s probably because the pump always shoots out way too much product which is wasteful and also messy because it collects inside the lid. As I’ve said before it is so challenging to find a concealer that is light enough for me to highlight with and this was the first of many I bought on my quest to find my holy grail highlighting concealer.

Gerard Cosmetics BB Plus Illumination

I was so excited for this product. I love a good glow and this really looked promising, but this doesn’t give me any glow whatsoever. It’s such a beautiful gold shade so you’d think it would give off a nice highlight, but I can’t even tell I have this on when I wear it. It doesn’t give off even so much as a sheen. I think the pump on mine is faulty or just crappy because I have to pump it several times and then it shoots out and gets everywhere. This wasn’t cheap and I much prefer my L’Oreal Magique Lumi Primer. It gives off a much better glow and it’s a lot cheaper.

LA Girl Glazed Lip Paints

This is a regret probably because of personal preference more than anything. For what they are, they’re a good product but I just don’t like these at all and I never reach for them. First off they need to be applied with a lip brush which I don’t mind for a product that is long lasting, but these never set so they don’t last long at all. Having to reapply frequently with a lip brush is just a pain. You can mix them and I do like that aspect, but I can do the same thing by layering lipsticks and it’ll last longer and be less fuss to apply. Even with a lip brush they can look kind of streaky which is super emphasized by how shiny they are. These were pretty cheap so it’s not a real loss, but I did buy quite a few of them so I could have saved that money and bought a lipstick I would have gotten more use out of.

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream

I think skincare is pretty individual, but this just did not work for me at all. I bought this more than a year ago because I was suffering from dry winter skin and this seemed like a good deal for a huge tub. This was so insanely thick and greasy, my skin was basically suffocated by it and it caused a ton of blocked pores. This very much reminds me of diaper rash cream for babies, it looks and feels exactly like it. Lesson here is just because you have dry skin it doesn’t mean you need something super heavy and thick, you just need something moisturizing which isn’t always heavy and thick. I have no idea what I’m going to do with this because there’s a ton left.

Essie Quick-e Drying Drops

I had a brief period last year where I was really into nails so I bought this since I’m so impatient and it’s supposed to speed up the process. This didn’t make my nails dry faster so that makes it a fail since that’s it’s only claim. Essie isn’t cheap so I really wish I had skipped this.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette

This is a huge makeup regret of mine. I remember being so excited when I saw this in Sephora around my birthday last year. It was beyond hyped up and I love highlighter so I had been lusting after this for a long time. It just doesn’t do it for me. The first powder on the left is supposed to be like a setting powder and I don’t really notice any change when I wear this. The second and third are supposed to highlights. The second is super subtle so not really my taste and the third is just too dark for me. I am disappointed by this since it was expensive, but I hope to get use out of it on others just not on me. The second powder would be perfect on a bride and I am doing a wedding this summer so this might be useful then.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream- Monte Carlo

I bought this last summer during my trip to the US. I was so excited to actually see a display of NYX products since NYX is hard to find here. I had been wanting to try these, but it’s not what I pictured. When I see matte, I assume that it sets and dries flat but this never sets. When you have something that is so pigmented like a lipstick and doesn’t set, it moves all around and just looks messy. They have a ton of great colours so I wish these dried and I would probably like them.

MAC Prep and Prime Highlighter- Radiant Rose

This isn’t a bad product at all, it just doesn’t do anything for me. It’s extremely similar to my skintone so when it’s blended out it doesn’t highlight. For someone with cool toned skin who is darker than me, this would be great but it doesn’t do anything highlighting wise for me. I bought this in a blog sale, so I didn’t pay full price for it luckily.

Tarte Pencil Eyeliners

I just want to clarify first and say that these are not Tarte’s regular Amazonian Clay formula. These were a holiday kit that I got discounted on Tarte’s website after the holiday season. I wanted this set because it has a ton of colours, which I thought would be handy to have if I wanted to do a pop of colour. Once these are blended out, they don’t really retain their original colour so that’s a serious negative. I also found these to lack pigmentation and be kind of dry. I don’t reach for pencil liner a ton, but when I do I definitely don’t reach for these.

Bumble and Bumble Shine Spray

I have had this for so long. My sister got this for me for Christmas so long ago, like when I thought Sephora was overwhelming and not my personal candy land. I picked this out because I’d seen lots about bumble and bumble in magazines so I wanted to try it but this just isn’t good. It makes my hair feel so sticky and crunchy without any noticeable shine which is it’s entire claim. All it does is make my hair look kind of greasy which is a feat because my hair is on the drier side and never gets oily.

MAC Lipstick- Angel

I love MAC lipsticks, but I could have done without this shade. I will probably never purchase another frost finish again. This just doesn’t look right on me. No matter how moisturized my lips are it always makes my lips look cracked and dry. There are better pinks than this. I did get this at a CCO so at least I didn’t pay full price.

So there you have it! Which products do you regret buying?

Bye for now!

I am just curious what you will be doing with all this make up if you are not looking it at using it again? I love this post! Keep up the good work!

Well I will usually pass it along to people who will enjoy it. I passed on a bunch a couple of months ago to my friends. Things that aren’t good or are old I’ll get rod of. Some of these things I will sanitize and keep to use on others

Sorry to hear about the MAC lipstick. At least you didn’t pay full price. I’m surprised to see the Tarte eyeliners on here. I have never tried them but have thought about it. Good thing I didn’t buy them then! Thanks for sharing! 🙂 xo

Ya I know now that frost finishes are not for me. These are definitely different than Tarte’s regular line of liners, these are not the same quality at all.

Oh ok then. Thanks for letting me know! I don’t think I would like a frost finish very much either.

I love Cera ve, I have the cleanser but sometimes I feel like its too much for my skin and my I have to switch to another cleanser.

    • Reply Chelsey May 6, 2015 at 8:50 pm

I have normal to dry skin and I like the Simple Foaming Cleanser. It’s very light!

      • Reply 1reddiva83 May 6, 2015 at 8:51 pm

oh, really. I may try it but I have eight facial cleansers and I am on a no buy. so yeah hopefully they don’t discontinue it before I get there.

Its a fairly new line so I’m sure it will still be there! Or I hope so because I love it!

So surprised about the Ambient Lighting palette!! Glad I haven’t joined the masses and don’t own this. It’s SO expensive too. Also thats a bummer about the Gerard BB cream. I never see anything mentioned about it anywhere though, so I guess now I know why!

Ya I will hopefully get use out it still on others even if it’s not my style! I had heard that the BB Plus was the same colour as MAC’s Whisper of Guilt but in a liquid form but I can’t see that being true since it doesn’t really illuminate at all.

So close to buying the Essie quick-things-majig today! So happy I don’t do it now.
I usually find products like that to not work.

I’m curious about the Ambient Lighting palette, but it’s so expensive. I might just keep on postponing it after this!

    • Reply Chelsey May 7, 2015 at 2:13 pm

Ya it honestly was a total fail. The Ambient Lighting Palette isn’t a bad product at all, just not my style. My hope is to one day do freelance makeup so I can see it being perfect for that.

I’ll probably end up buying the singles if I’m buying it. Instead of ending up with a lot of “when am I ever going to use this?!?l”-products

I find the hourglass palette actually applies nicer with a finger instead of a brush. I don’t know if you’ve tried it? I know what you mean about it, some days it works for me and others it just doesn’t!

    • Reply Chelsey May 10, 2015 at 3:25 pm

Hmm I’ll give that a try, thanks!

I really love MAC Pro longwear concealer for blemishes, but it’s not great for undereyes really 🙁

    • Reply Chelsey May 10, 2015 at 6:02 pm

Ya that is probably how I will use it up!

  • Reply ReyShelley May 26, 2015 at 11:41 am

I definitely agree with your comments on the MAC Pro Longwear Concealer! It did not work for me either. I would have had to mix my own shade to get a good match, which wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t a pricey item. I also feel the same way about the NYX lip cream! It’s such a shame!

    • Reply Chelsey May 26, 2015 at 11:50 am

Ya the prolong wear concealer needs more shades! But even so it creased so bad so I still don’t think I would buy it again.

      • Reply ReyShelley May 26, 2015 at 11:54 am

Agreed! Was not a fan of the texture either! Have you tried the Nars creamy concealer? It’s not holy grail status for me, but it is the closest thus far!

Yes and its very good! But I’m currently using the Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer and I actually like it even more!
