Cool Toned Makeup Tutorial: Purple Glitter Smokey Eye and ‘Greige’ Lips

July 23, 2015

Hi Everyone!

Today I felt inspired and decided to play around with an all cool toned makeup look. As you probably already know I love my warm tones and I almost never go for cool tones but my friend Jen just brought me back this MAC Dazzle Shadow in Get Physical from New York City and I was inspired to use it in a look. It’s a deep purple shadow with tons of blue glitter in it and I own nothing like it so this was super fun for me to play with.

For this look it’s best to start with your eyes first, the shadows I used had loads of fallout and it was easier to just wipe it away than try to clean it up without screwing up foundation or concealer.

Step 1

I started with my eyes already primed with MAC’s Paint Pot in Soft Ochre and Urban Decay’s Original Primer Potion. Since we’re working with glitter, priming is even more important to help everything stick. I then used Cool Grey from the Lorac Pro Palette 2 as my transition shade. I usually go for a light brown or a peach as my transition shade, but since this is going to be all cool toned I switched it up a bit. Using a Sigma E40 I buffed this into a crease and above. I found that this did need quite a bit of buffing to look smooth.

Step 2

Once I had the grey how I wanted it, I reached for the Make Up For Ever Artist Shadow in M928 Eggplant with a flat shader brush. The flat brush made sure I got minimal fallout and as much pigmentation as possible. I placed this in the inner and outer corners and then connected it in the crease. I left a blank space in the centre where I’m going to put the Dazzle Shadow. You can put this all over the lid, it doesn’t really matter I just didn’t seem much point. The blank space wasn’t as clean as I intended but it made no difference in the end. Once I got the colour where I wanted it, I blended over the crease area so it would mesh with the transition shade.

Step 3

Now it’s time for the star of the show, the Dazzle Shadow. I wanted this to be as reflective and glittery as possible so I applied to the centre of my lid with my finger. You could use a flat shade brush if you didn’t want to use your finger. Now you can see why I did my eyes first.

Step 4

Since I wanted this to be very blown out and smokey I then used Black from the Lorac Pro Palette 2 to deepen the outer corner.

Step 5

I am going to use lashes later on so I did want to add a little liner. I used the Nars Larger than Life pencil eye liner in Via Veneto to line along my upper lash line and then smudged it out slightly with a pencil brush and some more of the black shadow.

Step 6

Finally I could clean up all the fallout with a makeup wipe and move on to my lower lashline. For my lower lashline I took the original MUFE purple I used and pressed it into the lower lashline from inner to outer corner. I took the same purple on a pencil brush and smoked it out. Just to bring some of the glitter down onto the lower lashline I pressed some of the Dazzle Shadow right into the centre of my lower lashline. I also added black liner to my waterline and blended it with the purple.

Lastly I added mascara and lashes to complete the eyes.

For my face I decided to keep with the cool toned theme. I chose a purple toned blush (Clinique Cheek Pop in Plum Pop) to coordinate with the eyes. I passed on the bronzer and just contoured with a grey toned contour powder (Anastasia Fawn).

Foundation: Nars Sheer Glow (Mont Blanc) with 3 drops Cover Fx Custom Cover Drops (P20)

I decided to step way, way out of my comfort zone for lips and try out a grey lippie I bought a while back. I know this won’t be for everyone, but I figured I’d try it out. I’m still not sure if I’ll make it out of the house with this on, but using it in a look is a start. The lip colour is LA Splash’s OG Ghoulish Liquid Lipstick.

Here is the completed look:

For those of you not into the greige lip trend, I also paired this with a cool toned pink for a softer, less out there pairing. This lip is MAC’s Edge to Edge Lip Liner and LA Splash’s Charmed Liquid Lipstick

So there you have it! I had so much fun stepping out of my neutral funk today. I hope you enjoyed this look and let me know what you think of ‘greige’ lips down below!

Bye for now!
